THE Zambia Police has launched investigations into social media speculations that President Edgar Lungu has fallen ill and that the defence and security wings are making arrangement for Vice-President Inonge Wina to take over the presidency.

Inspector General of Police Kakoma Kanganja has warned that those behind such sadistic speculations would be arrested and prosecuted for alarming the country with false and malicious rumours.

Mr Kanganja said there was information circulating on social media insinuating that the Head of State was unwell and that the defence and security wings were making arrangements for the Vice President to take over office.

Mr Kanganja said the insinuations that President Lungu was unwell were nothing but a malicious fabrication which should not be taken seriously.

He said in a statement yesterday that the insinuations were a malicious fabrication and one of the numerous falsehoods with ill intended motives.

He said the conduct being perpetrated through what he termed a highly abused social media aimed at misleading the general populace and to cause alarm was criminal and those involved would be arrested.

“As Zambia Police, we urge members of the public to disregard this deceptive and alarming information and treat it with the highest contempt that it deserves. We have instituted investigations in the matter and all those that will be found to be behind the act will be arrested and dealt with in accordance with the provisions of the law,” Mr Kanganja said. He also reminded the public that apart from the authors of such alarming information or statement, any person that would be found to have participated in circulating such alarming information risked being arrested.
