SENATIONAL Zanaco Football Club have maintained their domestic league glory after seeing off a stubborn Red Arrows side 2-1 in a closely contested match to gallop to 64 points with a few games remaining before the FAZ/MTN curtain closes.
Two first half goals in quick succession from Saith Sakala and Richard Kasonde were all the bankers needed to record victory over Arrows whose performance towards the end of the season had not been inspiring.
Sakala opened the scores in the 41st minute and before Arrows could re-organise their rear Kasonde doubled the lead three minutes later, leaving the airmen trailing by two goals to nil before the break. However, Arrows scored a face-saver by Francis Simwanza who found the back of the net deep in stoppage time but that was not enough to derail the bankers who were looking forward to playing in the continental competition.
Meanwhile, Zanaco’s closest rivals Nkana beat Lumwana Radiants 1-0 to rise to 57 points while Zesco came from a goal down to beat Lusaka Tigers 2-1.
The game was almost headed for a 1-all draw when “Zega” striker Idriss Mbombo scored a winner in the 81st minute, helping his steam to replace Buffaloes on the fourth position on the radar with 46 points though the team has seven games in hand due to continental commitments in the CAF Champions League from which they have just been ejected by South African giants Mamelodi Sundowns.
The defending champions are 18 points adrift of log leaders Zanaco, who also have two games in hand.
