Solwezi road workers down tools

WORKS on Lot 2 of the Chingola-Solwezi road have ground to a halt after Buildcon Engineering workers went on strike following the non-payment of salaries for about three months. Buildcon Engineering is constructing the 40 km stretch of the road between Shafilundu and Mutenda. A check by the Daily Nation found workers had abandoned the construction site and were demanding to be paid their salary arrears. And some workers who spoke on condition of anonymity for fear of victimisation said  that non-payment of salaries had prompted them to go on strike. They complained that they have not been paid their wages for three months now. “How do we survive without money? We have families and some of our children are school-going children,’’ one of them said. They have appealed to Government to intervene in the matter. “If relevant authorities don’t intervene quickly, it will delay the on-going works on the road,” one of the workers said. Contacted for a comment, Buildcon engineering project manager only identified as a Mr Suad confirmed the development. Mr Suad however said the process to pay the workers had started and that soon they would be paid. “They should not panic, we are working round the clock in ensuring that they get their money on time,’’ he said.
