‘Barren woman’  admits stealing baby

 

A LUSAKA woman accused of stealing a baby has admitted the charge and told the court that she badly needed a child because she is barren.

Appearing before Lusaka Magistrates Humphrey Chitalu was Gift Phiri, 26, a business lady of Kuku compound.

Admitting the charge, Phiri told the court that she stole the child because she was barren and that she wanted the baby to be hers.

She is facing one count of child stealing contrary to section 171 of the laws of Zambia.

It is alleged that Phiri on October 1 this year with intent to deprive Charity Mwamba of her child under the age of 16 years, fraudulently and took away the said child.

The matter comes up on October 15 for facts and sentencing.

Meanwhile, a soldier in the Zambia Army accused of killing his wife has appeared in the Lusaka Magistrates Court for an explanation of the charge.

Patrick Chewe, 41, of Apollo Military Camp in Lusaka West, appeared before Chief Resident Magistrate Kenneth Mulife for the explanation of the charge of murder.

Chewe is facing one count of murder contrary to section 200 of the laws of Zambia.

It is alleged that Chewe on July 8, 2016, murdered his wife Aliness Tembo.

The matter comes up on October 21 for mention awaiting instructions from the Director of Public Prosecutions for committal to the High Court for trial.
