KITWE district commissioner Chanda Kabwe has applauded Mopani Copper Mines and other four companies for constructing a bridge in the eastern part of the district to connect the Mwekera farming block to the rest of Kitwe.
Mr Kabwe said the development was timely because the people in Mwekera previously used a dangerous makeshift bridge to conduct their daily activities.
He said Kitwe East was an important area because it was rich in agricultural production.
The district commissioner said Kitwe East was the food basket of the city because the medium and small scale farmers contributed positively to the food security of the town.
Mr Chanda said apart from Mopani the other four companies such as Mama Africa, Copperbelt Energy Corporation,(CEC), Truckmec and Copperbelt Development Foundation Limited (CDFL) worked tirelessly to improve the lives of the people by constructing the bridge.
He said the people of Kitwe East faced many problems to transport their agricultural products to other parts of town after the bridge collapsed eight months ago .
He said the good gesture by Mopani and the other four companies was commendable because they believed in the policies of the PF government.
Mr Chanda said the five companies decided to construct the bridge in Mwekera farming block because the area was vital to agriculture.
He said other companies in the city should emulate the gesture of the five firms which had made the lives of the people of Mwekera different because without their participation the people would have continued to face challenges in their daily lives.
Mr Chanda said the Mwekera farming bloc had fertile soils for vegetable production.
