OPPOSITION United party for National Development (UPND) Losing candidates for Kalulushi and Luanshya constituencies respectively have withdrawn their election petitions from the Ndola High Court.
The two candidates that have withdrawn are Kalulushi’s Evaristo Mwalilimo who challenged the election of Patriotic Front (PF) candidate Kampamba Mulenga and Hellen Mulenga who challenged the election of PF Steven Chungu as MP for Luanshya Central.
When the matter came up for hearing before High Court Judge Davies Mumba, Mr Mwalilimo’s Lawyer, Chimuka Magubwi of Magubwi and Associates informed the court that his client had opted to withdraw the matter, but gave no reasons for the withdrawal.
“My Lord, we wish to bring it to the attention of the court that we do not want to proceed with the petition as my client has instructed me to withdraw the matter before you.
“Therefore, my application this morning before you my Lord is to withdraw the matter,” Mr Magubwi said.
Ms Kampamba Mulenga was represented by lawyer Terence Chabu.
Meanwhile, lawyer representing Ms. Hellen Mulenga, Tom Shamakamba of Shamakamba and Associates is yet to file in an affidavit before the High Court Judge Mary Mulanda, advancing reasons for withdrawing the Petition.
But the petitioner’s lawyer has officially notified the court that his client had opted not to continue with the matter.
The UPND had filed affidavits in the Ndola High Court seeking nullification of the five parliamentary seat won by the ruling party.
PF scooped 17 parliamentary seats on the Copperbelt.
