PRESIDENT Edgar Lungu’s selection of the three presiding officers of the National Assembly is a unique mix of experience and gender balance, Northern Province Minister Brian Mundubile has said.
Mr Mundubile, who is also Mporokoso Member of Parliament, has explained that he had expected Dr. Patrick Matibini to continue as the Speaker of the National Assembly for the next five years because of the way he took the conduct of business to a highest level based on his experience as a lawyer and judge.
“I was looking forward to be in Parliament which was being presided over by a Speaker of high calibre,” Mr Mundubile said.
He further explained that the election of the first and second deputy Speakers, the former MMD Mafinga parliamentarian Catherine Namugala and Mwimba Malama, who went through unopposed, was also a good move because of the vast experience that Ms Namugala had exhibited for the past 15 years as an MP.
Mr Mundubile added that Mr Malama also had an experience in the business of Parliament as a young and vibrant leader.
He stated that it was not surprising that the three presiding officers won their elections unopposed because even the opposition could not have brought up their candidates to contest for the seats because they saw quality in the three candidates.
“It was not necessary for the opposition to have brought up their candidates just for the sake of it as they also appreciated President Lungu’s selection,” he said.
