FOOTBALL Association of Zambia (FAZ) president Andrew Kamanga has given K2, 000 to the Shepolopolo team for beating Egypt 1-0 in an international friendly match on Friday at Sunset Stadium in Lusaka.
Kamanga said he was impressed by the team’s performance and hence felt obliged to motivate the girls in his personal capacity.
“This victory shows that you are a great team despite not qualifying to the Africa Women Championship in Cameroon. These friendlies are important as we prepare for the 2018 AWC qualifying series next year. FAZ will ensure the team plays as many friendlies as possible. I am giving the team K2, 000 as a token of appreciation for the good football each player displayed today,” he said.
He challenged the Shepolopolo to score more goals when they clash with Egypt in the last friendly match this afternoon.
“I believe you can score more goals, so beat Egypt 5-0 on Sunday. I urge the team to remain focused and continue to work hard,” Kamanga said.
Meanwhile, coach Enala Simbeya expressed delight that the Shepolopolo proved that they were a better side although missing out on the AWC finals.
Simbeya said Egypt lacked endurance and hence Zambia dominated the match.
“I am happy with the team’s performance. The midfield was a bit slow on the start but they managed to pick up speed before the break. We now have an idea of what Egypt can offer, so we can win by a bigger margin on Sunday,” she said.
And Egypt coach Mohammed Mostafa said the team had tremendously improved comparing to the previous friendly games.
“I feel the team has improved. The result is not important because we are using this friendly to assess each player,” Mostafa said.
Egypt will today play their last friendly with Zambia at Nkoloma Stadium in Lusaka. The North African side is using the friendlies to prepare for the AWC slated for Cameroon in November.
