16 inmates injured, 2 die in road accident

TWO inmates serving various jail sentences at Livingstone correctional facility died while 16 others and two officers sustained injuries after the vehicle they were in was involved in a road accident on Sunday along Mukuni road in Livingstone.

Zambia Correctional Services (ZCS) public relations officer Margaret Nawa, who confirmed the accident, said that the inmates were travelling to Mukuni palace for a football match when,  the driver of the Bedford truck registration number PS 3206 lost control after the truck developed a fault.

There were 28 passengers in total, 21 inmates and seven officers and Ms. Nawa said that all the victims were rushed to Livingstone General hospital for treatment and have all since been discharged after treatment.

“The Zambia Correctional Services wishes to confirm that there was an accident on 18th September, 2016 involving Bedford truck registration number PS 3206 carrying correctional officers and inmates to Mukuni’s palace for a football match. Two inmates died, while two officers and 16 other inmates sustained injuries”, the press statement dated 20th September head.

Ms. Nawa said the deceased were serving sentences at Livingstone correctional facility but withheld their names. She regretted the incident but added that the institution would provide logistical support to their families.
