…2-1 victory over Sundowns could be the clincher

ZESCO United is a leg away from storming the Confederation of African {CAF] Champions League final after they beat Mamelodi Sundowns 2-1 at Levy Mwanawasa Stadium in Ndola yesterday.

A brace from in-form striker Jackson Mwanza in a space of  two minutes in the second half was enough for Zesco to record victory at home in the semi-final first leg.

Sundowns will host Zesco this Saturday but a draw will be enough for the Zambian League champions to reach the finals.

The first half was fairly contested with Sundowns sending three scares to Zesco in 15 minutes of play.

Zesco could have taken the lead in the 16th minute when Simon Silwimba’s cross was saved by goalkeeper Denis Onyango. Jesse Were also denied Zesco the lead when he shot over the bar.

Sundowns came back strong in the last 10 minutes of the first half but Brilliat Khama failed to hit the target.

In second half, Zesco looked stronger and mounted pressure on the ‘‘Brazilians’’ defence.

Mwanza broke the deadlock in the 55th minute when he headed a brilliant cross from the right flank to beat Onyango on his far post.The inform striker completed his brace when he deflected a free kick into the Sundowns net, with Onyango protesting for offside.Zesco continued to press for a third goal but Sundowns held firm.Coach George Lwandamina introduced Idriss Mbombo for Jackson Mwanza with the hope of getting a third goal. Mbombo however missed two clear chances. Zesco relaxed in the last 10 minutes of the game, giving more space to Sundowns. Khama managed to score a consolation for Sundowns in the 86th minute.

Lwandamina said he was happy that they team won at home but will still have to work hard ahead of the final leg on Saturday.
