SEVERAL opposition political parties have confirmed that they will be attending the inauguration ceremony of President Edgar Lungu at Heroes Stadium today.
President Lungu is today expected to be inaugurated as Sixth Republican President along with his running mate, Vice-President Inonge Wina.
Political parties that confirmed their attendance to the Daily Nation included Movement for Multi-party Democracy (MMD), Zambia Republic Party (ZRP), National Revolution Party (NRP), Green Party (Greens) and Zambia Direct Democracy Movement (ZDDM) among others.
MMD president Felix Mutati said he was confident that Zambia was safe in the hands of President Lungu who had exhibited rare leadership qualities.
Mr. Mutati commended President Lungu for his humility, patience and magnanimity during the difficult month following the August 11 elections.
Greens president Peter Sinkamba told the Daily Nation that he would not attend the ceremony due to personal engagements, but has however assured President Lungu that he would send a party representative.
ZRP’s leader Wright Musoma noted that Zambians had been looking forward to President Lungu’s inauguration since he was declared winner last month.
He said it was a happy day for the people of Zambia as their wish had prevailed.
And ZDDM president Edwin Sakala said he was happy that the inauguration ceremony had finally come to pass.
Forum for Democracy Development (FDD) president Edith Nawakwi said she would not attend the ceremony because her party was not invited. And United Progressive People’s party (UPP) leader Saviour Chishimba said he would not attend the ceremony as it was a sheer waste of public resources and time.
