THE Zambia Sports Fans Association (ZSFA) has advised the Football Association of Zambia (FAZ) to begin preparations for the 2018 Russia World Cup qualifier against Nigeria on October 9.
ZSFA patron Peter Makembo expressed dismay that Zambia had not yet kicked off the preparations for a crucial match.
Makembo said Zambia’s aim was to qualify for the World Cup but with inadequate preparation, the target would not be met.
“The technical bench should have already assembled a provisional squad for the Nigeria match. We failed to beat Kenya last Sunday and yet we are so relaxed. I believe the players need more time to blend to produce good results,” he said.
He said waiting for the new coach to kick-off training would cost Zambia the much needed three points.
“I know it is FAZ’s desire to have a new coach drill the team for the World Cup race, but time is running out because Nigeria has already intensified preparation. It is our hope, as fans, that FAZ will critically look into this important matter,” he said.
Makembo said professional players should endeavour to replicate a good performance at national team level.
“I think the professional players are not putting in their best at national team. It is time they worked hard together with the local players to qualify Zambia to the World Cup,” he said.Zambia hosts Nigeria in their opening group B World Cup qualifying match at Levy Mwanawasa Stadium in Ndola on October 9.
