Chinese miner dies at Kasempa’s Raudi Mine


A MINER at Raudi mine in Jifumpa area in Kasempa district has died after a rock fell on him while three others are nursing serious injuries at Mukinge mission hospital.

Both North-Western Commissioner of police Lackson Sakala and Kasempa district commissioner Goodson Sansakuwa confirmed the incident in separate interviews.

Mr Sansakuwa said the accident happened in the early hours of Tuesday when the four miners where carrying out construction works at the mine site.

And Mr Sakala named the deceased as Lick Uki aged, 54, a Chinese by nationality.

Mr Sakala said Mr Lick died on the spot while the three other miners sustained injuries and were admitted at Mukinge Mission Hospital.

He explained that the accident occurred when the tunnel under construction in pit one of the mines collapsed while the four miners were carrying out construction works.

“I can confirm that we received a report of a mine accident in Kasempa where one miner, a Chinese by nationality, died on the spot while carrying some construction works,” Mr Sakala said.

Meanwhile, Mr Sansakuwa said that the mine safety department would be in the district soon to ascertain the safety of the mine.

He said his office would give full details to the general public on the accident once the mine safety department finalises its findings.

The incident was the second mine accident in a space of three months recorded at Jifumpa mine which was being run by Chinese investors.
