GOVERNMENT, through the Food Reserve Agency (FRA), has bought about 20,4oo by 50 kg bags of white maize from farmers in Zambezi district of North Western Province valued at K1,736,380.
Zambezi district commissioner Lawrence Kayumba in an interview told the Daily Nation that the commodity was purchased from Chitokoloki, Chivatu, Kakeki, Lunkunyi Dipalata and Nyakulenga, among other areas.
He said Government had released funds to pay the farmers and that most of them had already been paid.
“A few farmers that have not yet been paid but will be paid probably in the first week of September,” he said.
He said the exercise which started in June was progressing well.
He said Government was committed to ensuring that farmers who supplied their maize to the agency were paid on time so that they could start planning for the next farming season.
