NEW Congress Party (NCP) yesterday held a solidarity march past to register its displeasure on the tribal violence that has erupted in Southern Province following the declaration of President Edgar Lungu as winner of the August 11, 2016 general elections.
Peter Chanda described as uncalled-for the violence being perpetrated by the UPND cadres in Namwala district which has reduced Zambian citizens to destitutes in their own country.
Addressing journalists after a solidarity match past at Simson Building near Soweto market, Mr Chanda challenged the UPND leader Mr Hakainde Hichilema to show leadership and responsibility if he loved the people of Zambia.
Mr Chanda said the situation in Namwala had so far exposed Mr Hichilema.
“I want to categorically state that it is unacceptable for Zambians to become destitute, displaced, have their houses and food burnt in the country of their origin.
“I want the Zambians to know that HH does not mean well for this country. We gathered here with marketeers, vendors to register our displeasure at the displaced Zambian citizens in Namwala,” Mr Chanda said.
He told Mr Hichilema that the Zambians had no idea of how to run around during war.
Mr Chanda said President Lungu was a man of peace because in all his campaign messages across the country, he had been preaching peace and the need to embrace the slogan of ‘One Zambia, One Nation.’
He said the victory that President Lungu attained after the August 11, 2016 general elections was something that he definitely deserved.
“All the rallies that I have attended with President Lungu, he enjoyed the favour of men and women including the children and the old,” he said.
Mr Chanda said even with the filing of the petition by the UPND in the Constitutional Court, President Lungu stilled emerges as a hero.
He said President Lungu could not be equated to any other President in Zambia apart from Nelson Mandela because he (Lungu) was a selfless leader who had gone as far as giving Zambians the Constitution and was ready to give Zambians the Bill of Rights had it not been for selfish and greedy individuals.
Mr Chanda said the detractors had hijacked the process of giving Zambians the Bill of Rights because they campaigned against it.
“HH is a hypocrite because he does not believe in what he says as he said at one point that he wants to give the Zambians a people-driven Constitution but look at him in the past election, he just campaigned against the Bill of Rights,” he said.
And Patriotic Front chairman for Katilungu branch Simson Building area Goodson Kasonso appealed to Mr Hichilema to preach peace and emulate the peaceful nature of President Lungu.
Mr Kasonso said President Lungu had been preaching peace throughout his campaigns while Mr Hichilema had been preaching Armageddon.
“Mr Hichilema should emulate President Lungu and start preaching peace especially in Southern Province, Western and North-Western province and everywhere in Zambia like the way President Lungu has been doing,” he said.
