High Court denies bail to murder accused

By Nation Reporter

THE Lusaka High Court has refused to grant bail to a former customer service officer who allegedly shot dead her husband.

The bail application was rejected by High Court judge Ms Justice Gertrude Chawatama after she established that the applicant failed to give the court proper reasons to warrant the court to grant her bail.

This is in a case in which Precious Longwe who was committed to the High Court for trial after she was accused of murdering her husband Akakanda Lubinda Litebele applied for a constitutional bail pending trial in the High Court.

According to her application filed in the High Court principal registry, Longwe, through her lawyer Osborne Ngoma, submitted that the law was already settled by the Supreme Court to the effect that the High Court had jurisdiction to grant bail or admit an accused person to bail in all cases including where one was charged with murder or any of the so-called unbailable offences.

Longwe added  that it was her prayer that the court invoke the provisions of Article (13) (3) to release her based on the reasons advanced in the affidavit to enable her look after her babies and participate in the national Referendum and general elections.

Precious, 30, of unknown house number off Buluwe Road, Woodlands Extension, was accused of shooting her husband five times after a domestic dispute on May 25, 2016 .
