…as HH accuses ECZ of bias

HAKAINDE Hichilema yesterday stormed the Electoral Commission of Zambia (ECZ) results centre at Mulungushi International Conference Centre and accused the commission of colluding with the Patriotic Front (PF) of manipulating the Thursday election results while totalling was still going on.

Mr Hichilema who is UPND presidential candidate has also declared he had won the general election triggering confusion in country where his supporters spilled on protesting the manipulation.

And the Zambia Police is investigating reports that the UPND brought into the country its own IT experts into the country masquarading as tourists to tamper with communication and ECZ infrastructure.

This prompted ECZ to announce results only verified electronically  which were confirmed by fax and phone.

The UPND cadres went on the streets in Kabwata shortly after Mr Hichilema declared he had won the elections at Mulungushi International Conference Centre and police had to rush to the area to quell the confusion.

This follows an incident which happened yesterday at the national election results centre, in which some unknown man was arrested by the Zambia police service for allegedly copying the election results from the ICT room with an intention to circulate the results.

It’s a total mess going on here.  The Electoral Commission somehow conniving with people in the political arena to delay release of results.  They start by refusing to issue polling station results certificates.

A lot of polling stations completed voting 6 hours ago but the Electoral Commission issued instructions for those certificates not to be issued at the polling stations and wait until its night time so that PF thugs armed with guns can take over police stations and write new results certificates which are not authenticated.

The UPND charged that the victim was a PF member who was trying to change the figures in favour of the ruling party.

They said PF had started panicking, because they had realised that they had lost the elections to the opposition party.

UPND leader Hakainde Hichilema accused the Electoral Commission of Zambia (ECZ) of conniving with PF to rig the elections.

Mr. Hichilema charged that there was collusion between the ECZ and the ruling to steal votes by delaying the release of results.

“There is a total mess going. The ECZ is conniving with PF to delay the release of results so that they could rig the elections. They start by refusing to issue polling station certificates called G12, a lot of polling stations completed voting on time but the commission’s director Priscilla Isaacs gave instructions for those certificates not to be issued at the polling stations and wait until night time so that that the PF thugs armed with guns can take over polling stations and write new results certificates which are not authenticated,” Mr. Hichilema said.

Mr Hichilema claimed that the PF cadres were beating up UPND cadres in Munali and Mandevu Constituencies as well as chasing them from polling stations.

The UPND leader claimed that the ECZ was generating new results through the G12 form alleging that the Commission had allegedly refused to sign the form long after voting had been closed.

“We know that the ECZ and PF are trying to cook the results, by delaying because they know that the results are not in their favour. ECZ officers at polling stations have been instructed not to sign form G12 which is the main source of information and documentation as to who has won or lost theses elections,” Mr. Hichilema said. Mr Hichilema said the delay in the announcing of results was a scheme for the PF to allegedly steal the results because according to him, the UPND had won the elections.
