SUDAN yesterday held Zambia to a barren draw in a 2017 Africa under-17 Cup of Nations second round first leg qualifier played at Nkoloma Stadium in Lusaka yesterday.
But Junior Chipolopolo Coach Mumamba Numba immediately declared that he was happy with the performance of the team owing to the shot period it had to prepare.
With both teams exhibiting some levels of immaturity, Zambia wasted several chances in the first half despite enjoying possession.
The Junior Chipolopolo kicked off the game on an epic note with Franciso Mwepu shooting wide the note in the 11th minute.
Zambia wasted another chance in the 19th minute when Niza Simutendwa’s shot from. Mwepu pass was saved by the Sudanese goalkeeper Abdalla Adam.
Mukuka Chanda failed to put Zambia in the lead when he shot wide the net in the 27th minute.
Sudan sent scare to Zambia in the 39 th minute after the visitors were awarded a free kick just near the penalty box after Hillary Mwinga fouled Shihabeldeen Alzobair. But Mohamed Abbas free kick slightly missed the post.
Coach Mumamba Numba substituted Christopher Phiri and Mukuka for Martin Njobvu and Harry Milanzi Junior just after the break.
Sudan dominated the second half but failed to take advantage of the unstable Zambian defence.
Alzobair missed a clear chance in the 54th minute when he dribbled through the Zambian defence beating goalkeeper Prince Bwalya but his shot hit the woodwork and bounced off.
In 65th minute, inefficient Zambian captain Musonda Kalale was substituted for Benson Kolala.
In the 68th minute, Sudan went into celebration when Ammar Mohamed shot hit the side net and was mistaken for a goal.
In 73rd minute, Mwepu again failed to hit home producing a soft shot from inside the net and was easily saved by the Sudanese goalkeeper.
And Sudan coach Motasim Khalid said his lads lacked confidence in the first half but put up good play in second half although failed to utilize chances.
Sudan hosts Zambia in two weeks for the second round final leg.
In the other qualifier, Cameroon thrashed Kenya 7-0. IF Zambia qualifies to the next round, she will meet either Kenya or Cameroon.
