Ten UPND cadres nabbed for violence

POLICE in Gwembe have nabbed 10 suspected United Party for National Development (UPND) cadres for attacking a Patriotic Front (PF) camp four days after a woman in the same area fell victim to the same brutality.

Meanwhile, Police in Kalomo have launched a manhunt for the UPND cadres who attacked and assaulted Kalomo central independent parliamentary candidate Smart Muwele last week.

Police deputy spokesperson Esther Mwaata Katongo said that four out of the nine were arrested yesterday in Gwembe following the fracas that took place on 31st July, 2016 around 20:00hrs where the cadres attacked the PF camp in the area.

Ms. Katongo identified the four as Bright Chisagano, Ockline Chooma, Caphas Hichuunga and Derrick Mwiinga.

She said the other six were arrested for attacking a woman of the same area identified as Mirriam Hazela on 29th July around 17:00 hours when they besieged and threw stones at her house for unknown reasons.

She explained that the 10 were still in police custody and would appear in court soon.

“In Southern Province, we have picked up four suspected UPND cadres in Gwembe identified as Bright Chisagano, 36, Ockline Chooma aged 26, Caphas Hichuunga aged 37 and Derrick Mwiinga aged 23 for attacking a Patriotic Front Camp at Nachilala on 31st August, 2016 at about 20:00 hours. The four strayed into the PF camp and began throwing stones at PF supporters. “In another incident, six UPND cadres have been picked up for attacking Mirriam Hazela aged 24 in Gwembe of Southern Province. The accused went to the complainant’s house where they began throwing stones at her house. This happened on 29th July, 2016 at about 17 00 hours. Among the detained are Commander Mwiinga aged 23 and Otray Halanga aged 22. They are all currently detained in police custody and will appear in court soon,” she said.

Meanwhile, Police in Kalomo have launched a manhunt for the UPND cadres who allegedly attacked and assaulted Kalomo central independent parliamentary candidate Smart Muwele last week.

Mr. Muwele told the Daily Nation that the police had assured him that they had launched a manhunt for cadres who assaulted him and smashed the windscreen for the vehicle of the PF candidate in the area.
