ECZ captures more than 6 million voters

OVER six million registered voters are poised to participate in this year’s general election according to the final 2016 voters’ register with more female voters captured than their male counterparts.

Addressing a stakeholders’ meeting at the Mulungushi International Conference Centre yesterday, Electoral Commission of Zambia (ECZ) chairperson Justice Esau Chulu  revealed that the final 2016 voters register had a total of 6, 698, 372 voters.

Justice Chulu disclosed that Lusaka was leading with 1,119,319 million voters followed by the Copperbelt with 1,034,548 million voters while Muchinga had the least number of voters with only 349,231.

He said the register would be certified tomorrow and the delivery of the ballots would take place on August 3rd 2016 while each presidential candidate would be given a copy of the certified register on August 4th 2016.

“The certification of the voters’ register will be made on 31st July 2016 as scheduled and will be availed to you. We have made a lot of progress on our part with regard to the holding of the 2016 election time table and the verification process has commenced with political party representatives and district staff at the Silverest warehouse,” Justice Chulu said.

He also said that ECZ was making efforts to ensure that all presidential candidates and their representatives were given a chance to tour the Information Technology Department at the ECZ headquarters to acquit themselves with the system.

“Arrangements are being made for presidential candidates, election agents and their campaign managers to tour the Information Technology Department at the headquarters on 8th August, 2016.
