A ROW has erupted between the two MMD factions over the interpretation of the Supreme Court judgment yesterday that referred back to the High Court the ruling that allowed the Felix Mutati group to hold a convention in Kabwe.
National secretary of the Mutati faction Raphael Nakachinda has maintained that the former Lunte parliamentarian is the party’s president and that the Supreme Court ruling has not in any way altered the status quo.
Mr Nakachinda was reacting to celebrations in the Nevers Mumba camp that the beleaguered former pastor has been reinstated as president of the MMD.
Speaking at a press briefing held at the party’s secretariat in Lusaka yesterday, Mr Nakachinda maintained that Mr Mutati remained the party president despite the Supreme Court ruling which referred the matter back to the High Court for retrial.
He said the claims by Dr Mumba’s camp was a misinterpretation of the Supreme Court and that as it stood Mr Mutati and his executive would continue at the helm of the MMD party.
Mr Nakachinda said the statement by Dr Mumba’s aide Winnie Zaloumis that he had been reinstated by the Supreme Court was a misinterpretation of the judgment .
Mr Nakachinda said he realized that sometimes lies could be believed to be the truth and he needed to quickly correct and give the people the truth. Mr Nakachinda said the legal position in view of the Supreme Court ruling yesterday was that the court did reinstate Dr Mumba as president of the MMD but only referred back the matter for retrial.
