Kitwe man jailed 4 months for trafficking in marijuana

THE Kitwe Magistrates Court has jailed a 27-year-old man of St Anthony township to four months imprisonment with hard labour for trafficking in 150 grammes of marijuana.

Magistrate Malota Phiri sent Benson Silweya to prison after he pleaded guilty to trafficking in the prohibited substance.

When the matter came up for plea, Silweya readily admitted the offence and told the court that he smoked the drug

to make himself strong when conducting business.

Facts are that on July 24, 2016, Mikando Luyando an officer with the Drug Enforcement Commission (DEC) received information that Silweya  trafficked in marijuana and was apprehended at a bar where he was found drinking.

On searching him 18 balls of marijuana in loose plastic bags were found on him.

The accused was interviewed and readily admitted the offense.

In mitigation, Silweya asked Magistrate Phiri to be lenient as he had learnt a lesson within the period he was in custody and promised to stay away from the drug.
