Chanda, two Post journalists face trial

4TH REVOLUTION president Eric Chanda will now be prosecuted by the Lusaka Magistrates Court in a matter he is jointly charged with two Post Newspaper journalists Mukosha Funga and Joan Chirwa for defamation of the President.

This is in a matter in which the trio stand accused of having defamed President Edgar Lungu in an article which was published in the Post dated May 9, 2015. Chanda is alleged to have said: “President Lungu has no moral right to warn State House staff because the first assignment he undertook after his election was to go to Mfuwe to socialize, club and drink.’’

Funga and Chirwa were jointly charged by with allegedly causing the publication of the said defamatory statement. When the matter came up yesterday, State prosecutor Sam Zulu told the court that he was in possession of instructions from the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) to commence trial in the matter.

However the trio could not take plea due to the absence of the trial court.

Magistrate Jennifer Bwalya later adjourned the matter to August 16 for plea and possible trial.
