NEVERS Mumba yesterday vented his anger on President Edgar Lungu and former President Rupiah Banda and accused the two of having sponsored the MMD convention that saw the election of Felix Mutati as president of the former ruling party.
Dr Mumba claimed that he was still MMD president and that Mr Mutati should be considered an illegality because according to him, Mutati had not been elected as the matter was still in the courts of law. Dr Mumba claimed that Mr Mutati was allegedly an expelled member of the MMD and could not be elected the president of the former ruling party.
He accused President Lungu and former president Banda of having schemed and sponsored the MMD national convention and that he (Dr Mumba) had never relinquished his position for the Daily Nation to be referring to him as the former president of the former ruling party.
He said he was taking great exception to be referred to as former MMD president because he had challenged the election of Mr Mutati in the courts of law.
“Felix Mutati cannot and will never be president of the MMD. The story you have run today that the UPND will create a position of Prime Minister to appease former MMD president is malicious. I said when I announced my support for the UPND that I was not seeking any position. So tell your boss that I take great exception to being called former MMD president. We are aware that those were the schemes of President Lungu and former president Banda. It was former president Banda who organised the resources for that illegal convention,” Dr Mumba said.
He complained that he did not know where the Daily Nation was getting the notion that he (Dr Mumba) was former MMD president.
Dr Mumba claimed that the Daily Nation had taken a deliberate position against him because its proprietor was allegedly a close friend of President Lungu and former president Banda.
“I know Richard Sakala is close to President Lungu and former president Banda,” Dr Mumba said.
Dr Mumba could not dispute the story that a position of Prime Minister would be created for him should the UPND form government after the August general elections. “Really you have our memorandum of understanding in your hands as you have stated but I told the UPND that I was not seeking any position. I do not know why you have taken a position against me when I have never offended you,” Dr Mumba said.
