ZAMBIA Amateur Athletics Association (ZAAA) says 400 meters female runner Kabange Mupopo will be a surprise package at the Rio Olympics in Brazil next month.
ZAAA president Elias Mpondela said the African gold medallist had continued to put up impressive performances in international events ahead of the Olympic Games.
Mpondela said Mupopo was a determined and hardworking athlete that had achieved a lot in just two years of her career.
“I am impressed with the on-going training ahead of the Olympics in Brazil. The technical team is working hard to prepare her,
“I have so much faith in Mupopo that she can put up a surprise performance in Olympics,” he said.
He said it usually took more than five years for an athlete to achieve what Mupopo had done in two years.
He said the High Performance Centre had produced and continued to mould more medal winners.
Mpondela however said the association needed resources to adequately train athletes to international level.
“It is not easy to train professional athletes like Mupopo to the required international standard. These athletes have to participate in many international events to gain the experience and exposure, but usually it is hampered by lack of resources,” he said.
United States based 100 meters runner Gerald Phiri (10.03seconds) and Mupopo (50:22seconds) are the two runners that had so far qualified for the Olympics.
