ZAMBIANS should take keen interest in reading the Bill of Rights as it is the only way they can know about its contents, the Patriotic Front Chisokone market branch chairperson in Kitwe Mulunda Mwanza has said.
He said it was unfortunate that the people were being misled about the Bill of Rights simply because they were ignorant of the contents of the document.
Mr Mwanza said the only way citizens could make informed decisions on how to vote in a referendum was when they read and digested the contents of the Bill of Rights.
He challenged all political party leaders at various levels to begin to sensitise the people about the contents of the Bill of Rights.
Mr Mwanza said it was sad that some political leaders who were supposed to be in the forefront of educating Zambians about the Bill of Rights were instead campaigning against the document.
He said it was disappointing that some aspiring candidates were not even educating the masses on the Bill of Rights and the referendum.
Mr Mwanza urged the public to embrace the culture of reading so that they could understand the Bill of Rights and the referendum.
Mr Mwanza said the political players should also step forward during this campaign period by telling their supporters about the vitality of the Bill of Rights and the referendum for the benefit of everyone. He said some politicians, especially the opposition camp, should stop misleading the public by fabricating lies about the Bill of Rights to disfranchise the people.
Mr Mwanza advised the media in Kitwe and beyond to ensure that they continued to disseminate the information to masses about the Bill of Rights and the referendum for the remaining days before the general election next month.
