Girl, 22, charged with killing her week-old daughter

THE Lusaka Magistrate’s Court has charged a 22-year-old woman with infanticide following the death of her one-week-old baby girl.

Before Magistrate Alice Walusiku was Martha Kangwa of Lusaka’s Chelstone area, who was arrested for the murder of her baby on June 7, 2016.

And in the same matter, a fireman from the Lusaka Central Fire Station Bernard Mulenga in his statement to the police explained that while on duty, he received a phone call that there was a baby that had been dumped in a pit latrine in Chelstone area.

Mr Mulenga said the firefighters rushed to the scene and later managed to retrieve the body of the baby which they handed over to the police.

Kangwa, unemployed, has since been charged with murder contrary to Section 200 of the Penal Code.

Kangwa has been charged with infanticide which is the crime of a mother killing her child within a year of birth.
