Vendors at Solwezi City Mall removed

By Nation Reporter

Following an outcry from members of the public over vendors invading the newly opened Mall in Solwezi, Solwezi municipal council has swiftly moved in relocate them to other trading spaces.

Last week, North Western Province permanent secretary Ephraim Mateyo commissioned the US$20 million first ever shopping mall in Solwezi and North Western province as whole.

Few days after commissioning the facility, the vendors invaded the mall by allocating themselves trading space right in front of the facility.

But Solwezi municipal council has quickly moved in and controlled the situation by removing all the vendors.

A check by the Daily Nation found council police officers deployed at the facility were keeping vigil.

And Solwezi Municipal Council Director of Housing and Social Services Justin Mbashila warned that the local authority would not allow lawlessness in town.

He said the council would not allow vendors to take the law in their own hands by trading in undesignated places.

“We will not condone such behaviour, the facility has added beauty to the town and so it is not right to invade it like that,” Mr Mbashila said.
