Moono Lubezhi, the UPND candidate for Namwala constituency and seven other UPND members, have been arrested for assault in which FDD Namwala parliamentary hopeful Charity Kabongomana together with FDD council chairman candidate Prince Sikagoma were attacked.
Southern Province Police Commissioner Edwin Phiri said yesterday that the eight suspects appeared before Namwala Resident Magistrate Andrew Kasongo.
Mr Phiri said the suspects were charged with assault occasioning actual bodily harm and grievous bodily harm.
They allegedly assaulted Mrs Kabongomana, 54, of Lusaka’s Kaunda Stage 1 area; Mr Sikagoma, 30, of Kasenga in Namwala, and an FDD member Mafred Shichikoma, 43, of Kabulamwanda area of Namwala.
Others charged with Ms Lubezhi included Collins Lubezhi Shamangobe, 43, the brother of the former parliamentarian; McCloud Moomba, 54; Oster Chikwayi, 42; Winnie Shimungalu, 48; Sara Ngeke Kabwe, 29; of Lusaka’s Garden compound; Joseph Mainza, 71; and Davies Mukena Sifuwe, 34.
Mr Phiri said all the suspects had been granted cash bail of K1,500 with two working sureties.
He however said the accused persons were still remanded in custody pending fulfilment of bail conditions.
The police, meanwhile, have appealed to all the aspiring candidates to take ownership of the electoral process and play by the rules of the game to ensure equal protection under the law.
The matter comes up before court for mention on June 30 while trial date has been set for 19 July 2016.
