NINETEEN UPND cadres were on Saturday injured in a road traffic accident in Chipata when a vehicle they were travelling in overturned.
Police acting public relations officer Esther Katongo confirmed the incident yesterday, indicating that the accident happened around 14:30 hours.
Ms. Katongo said the accident occurred when the truck they were in which was heading to Paramount Chief Mpezeni’s palace where their leaders had gone to pay a courtesy call on the chief flipped over after the driver failed to negotiate a corner at a turn-off near the palace due to excessive speed.
She said among the 19 injured, 14 were treated and discharged while five had been admitted to Chipata Central Hospital.
“A truck that was carrying some UPND supporters heading to Paramount Chief Mpezeni flipped after the driver of the truck failed to negotiate a corner at the turn-off to the palace due to excessive speed; 14 of them were discharged while five are still admitted at Chipata Central Hospital,” she said.
Meanwhile, Ms. Katongo disclosed that another pupil of Hillcrest Technical School has died after the accident which occurred on Friday night near Kozo Lodge, about five kilometres south of Choma.
This has brought the number of those who died in the accident to seven.
“Postmoterms will be conducted tomorrow on the bodies that were deposited in Choma General Hospital mortuary and will then be transported to Livingstone,” Ms. Katongo said.
