Security guard shot dead

A security guard in Ndola has been shot dead after a Senegalese national fired five times in his head and in the process also injured himself.

Copperbelt police Commissioner Charity Katanga confirmed this in a telephone interview.

She said the incident happened at 11:45 hours yesterday at Dola Hill shopping area.

Ms Katanga identified the murder suspect as 36-year-old Mamadou Ndiyae resident of Maposa, Maseka area while the security guard from Unity protection Security Company was yet to be identified.

“What happened was that the security guard at the shopping mall has been noticing the suspect going to the mall to conduct some business but when he approached him today (yesterday) to query him about his activities, he became violent.

It was at this point that the security guard used some liquid to spray the suspect’s eyes. This infuriated the suspect who pulled a pistol and shot the security guard in the head five times,” she said.

Ms Katanga said the suspect escaped from the scene into Twapya Township, but could not go further because he was bleeding badly from the wound he sustained when he shot himself accidentally.

She disclosed that the police trailed the vehicle which they found parked and the suspect was unconscious.

Ms Katanga said the suspect was apprehended but was in Ndola Central Hospital where he was receiving treatment under guard.

She stated that she would not give the condition of the suspect but that the body of the deceased was in Ndola central mortuary.

Ms Katanga disclosed that a pistol with 23 rounds of ammunition was recovered from the scene.

And in another development, a resident of Luanshya had lost four fingers after dynamite exploded in his hand. Mrs. Katanga said the victim had been identified as Christopher Shinga of Mubuluma area.

She stated that Shinga set the dynamite when he went to catch fish in Kafue River.

She disclosed that the middle finger had been completely cut off and that the victim had minor injuries on other parts of the body.
