POLICE in Kalulushi have arrested and detained a suspected UPND cadre for allegedly pulling down campaign posters of the ruling Patriotic Front (PF) mayoral candidate Godfridah Mulenga.
Copperbelt Police Chief Charity Katanga confirmed the arrest and detention of Isaac Nyirenda aged 24 years old of house number 44, Kalomo road in Kalulushi.
She said in an interview in Kitwe yesterday that Nyirenda was detained at Kalulushi Central Police Station and the posters were in the custody of the police and would be used as evidence.
“I can confirm that police in Kalulushi have arrested and detained a suspected UPND cadre identified as Isaac Nyirenda for allegedly pulling down campaign posters of PF mayoral candidate Godfridah Mulenga.
Nyirenda was found pulling down the posters of the ruling PF mayoral candidate Godfridah Mulenga by a PF cadre identified as Gregory Mulenga.
“Mulenga handed over Nyirenda to the police and is detained at Kalulushi Plolice station and the posters which were pulled down are being kept by the police as evidence,” Ms Katanga said.
Ms Katanga said political party leaders should tell their cadres to observe the Electoral Act and Electoral Code of Conduct to avoid being found in conflict with the law.
She said pulling down of campaign posters of political party candidates was a serious offence and that political party leaders and their cadres should desist from abrogating the law because the police would ensure that culprits faced the wrath of the law.
“For political parties and their cadres who do not want to observe the Electoral Act and Electoral Code of Conduct, they will always face the wrath of the law because the police will continue to deal with them. The police will ensure that they carry out their duties,” she said.
