SOME UPND members in Kitwe’s Wusakile constituency executive have decided to dump the party’s parliamentary candidate Mundia Sikufele to support Independent candidate Pavyuma Kalobo.
But, UPND Kitwe District chairman Timothy Mfula said he could not comment on the matter because he had never held a meeting with the UPND Wusakile constituency executive committee.
Some members of constituency executive committee and the UPND provincial leaders told the Daily Nation that they had decided to dump Mr Sikufele because, according to them, he did not stand a chance of winning the seat in the August 11 elections.
The Wusakile constituency executive committee, led by one of the unsuccessful applicants, vowed never to support Mr Sikufele, but instead support Mr Kalobo whom they perceived to be strong on the ground.
“Yes, it is true that our constituency officials are supporting Kalobo in Wusakile constituency because they think Mr Sikufele cannot win an election.Apart from that, they think their preferred candidate should have been adopted as opposed to Sikufele,” said one UPND provincial official.
The statement was also echoed by some constituency officials who said they wanted to meet Mr Kalobo so that they discussed the issue of dumping Sikufele and supporting him.
“We have been looking for Mr Kalobo, but he is not seen. He does not want to meet us so that we talk to him about our decision to support him,” said one constituency official.
But, when contacted for a comment, one of Kalobo’s supporters Christine Nicodemus told the Daily Nation that the UPND Wusakile constituency officials wanted Mr Kalobo to stop campaigning for President Edgar Lungu and start campaigning for UPND leader Hakainde Hichilema.
“Yes, I have heard that story before, but their condition is that if they start campaigning for Mr Kalobo, he should also start campaigning for Hichilema, which we have refused to do. Despite going Independent, we still support President Edgar Lungu because he has put Zambia in the hands of God,” she said.
