5 Govt accountants face K467,000 charge

FIVE accountants of the Ministry of Health are expected to appear in the Lusaka Magistrates Court on charges of theft by public servant involving K467,000 – property of the Government. 

The officers, Zukas Kaoma, Luke Machete, Enala Phiri, Bholley Sikazwe and Josephine Makeche, are expected to take plea before Magistrate Judy Chiyaika.

They are in count one facing a charge of theft by public servant contrary to Section 277 of the laws of Zambia.

It is alleged that Kaoma, Makeche and Phiri on dates unknown but between April 1 and December 31, 2008, being persons employed in the Ministry of Health as acting principal accountant, senior accountant and assistant jointly and while acting together with other persons unknown did steal  K223,500, which came into their possession by virtue of their employment.

Phiri and Sikazwe are in count two facing a charge of theft by public servant when they on January 1 and December 31 the same year allegedly stole K247,775 the money belonging to the Government of Zambia.

In count three and four, Makeche is facing a charge of wilfully or recklessly giving false information to an officer contrary to Section 26 of the Money Laundering Act.

She is on June 1, 2009, and March 31, 2011, to have wilfully and recklessly given false information to an officer with respect to the ownership of properties, namely a house on Plot no. 12951 situated in Chilenje South and a block of two flats on Plot no. 13363 in the same area, information to which the authorized officers were entitled to under this Act.

The five officers are expected to appear in court soon.
