37 parliamentary candidates target North-West

THIRTY-SEVEN candidates from various political parties on Tuesday successfully filed in their nominations to contest in the 12 constituencies in North-Western Province.

The Electoral Commission of Zambia (ECZ) had set May 31 as date for the filing in of nominations for the adopted parliamentary and local government candidates for the August general elections.

In Solwezi Central, Patriotic Front’s Dawson Kafwaya successfully filed in his nomination papers at exactly 11:30 hours to returning officer Evans Kamwana.

Mr Kafwaya was escorted by scores of PF supporters to the nominations centre.

Others that successfully filed in their nomination papers in Solwezi Central were UPND’s Starffod Mulusa and Stafford Mwansa of the Green Party.

In Solwezi East constituency, the PF fielded Richard Taima while the UPND and FDD have Leaky Kintu and Willie Kafunga respectively.

In Solwezi West, former Kalumbila district commissioner Marjorie Dauchi successfully filed in on the PF ticket while the UPND fielded the immediate past Member of Parliament Teddy Kasonso.

Meanwhile, immediate past Member of Parliament for Mufumbwe Steven Masumba is recontesting his seat.

Mr Masumba is in the race against UPND’s Elliot Kamondo, FDD’s Samora Kayombo while Davies Mbalau and Watson Kyakilika filed in as independent candidates.

In Chavuma, five candidates filed in their nomination papers before returning officer Maybin Mulenga with Rose Salukatula contesting the seat on the PF ticket.

Others were Victor Lumai of UPND and two independent candidates.

Meanwhile, immediate past Manyinga Member of Parliament Danny Chingimbu is recontesting his seat on the PF ticket.

In Kasempa, three candidates successfully filed in their nomination papers among whom were former Lumwana Mine sustainability manager Brenda Tambatamba contesting the seat on the UPND ticket while the PF fielded Dominic Kasosa with Peter Masumba contesting as an independent  candidate.

And in Zambezi West, Lands and Natural Resources minister Christabel Ngimbu is recontesting her seat after successfully filing in her nomination papers with the UPND fielding Prisca Kucheka while in Zambezi East constituency Lt General Robert Kankinza successfully filed in his papers on the PF ticket with the UPND featuring Brian Kambita.

Meanwhile, in Mwinilunga constituency the PF have fielded local businessman Jonathan Kapaipi while Newton Samakai is contesting on the opposition UPND ticket.

Returning officer Alisinde Nawa declared both candidates’ nomination papers successful shortly after filing.

And Anti-Voter Apathy provincial coordinator Cranes Kasito has described the nomination process across the province as peaceful.

He commended the participating political parties and their supporters for their exemplary behaviour.

‘’So far, so good. The process has been peaceful and we hope that political parties participating in this year’s elections will continue with the same spirit,” Mr Kasito said.

On 11 August, Zambians go to the polls to elect the Head of State, members of Parliament, executive mayors and council chairpersons and councillors.
