THE Electoral Commission of Zambia (ECZ) has remained one of the most credible electoral bodies with a very good reputation of conducting transparent, free and fair elections in the whole of Southern Africa, British High Commissioner to Zambia Fergus Cochrane Dyet has said.
Mr Dyet said the last time he was in Zambia as an election observer he was extremely impressed with the manner the ECZ had conducted the 2006 general elections and was hopeful that the Commission was going to maintain its credibility with the August general elections.
Mr Dyet said the way the 2006 general elections were conducted was impressive and that the ECZ had the challenge of maintaining the credibility for which it had been known of conducting free and fair elections.
“In was here (in Zambia) in 2006 as an election observer and I was impressed with the way the ECZ conducted the elections. The ECZ has a very good reputation of conducting transparent, free and fair elections in the whole of Southern Africa and I hope it will maintain its credibility in the coming general elections. The question is, are they going to see a repeat of what happened in the 2006 general elections? Mr Dyet asked.
And Mr Dyet said it was important for political leaders to stay calm during the elections time and conduct their campaigns devoid of violence and malice.
He said it was vital for political leaders to control their followers so that the country could begin to see less political violence as the August general elections were drawing nearer.
