Lungu pardons 554 prisoners to mark Freedom Day

By Nation Reporter

PRESIDENT Edgar Lungu has released and pardoned 554 inmates through presidential amnesty to commemorate African Freedom Day today, among them 40 Ethiopian youths.

Home Affairs minister Davis Mwila expressed gratitude to President Lungu for exercising the powers vested in him by Article 59 of the Constitution, adding that the gesture has greatly contributed to the decongestion of prisons.

Mr. Mwila said the pardoning of 40 Ethiopian youths was of great significance to Government because it has helped resolve the dilemma of having children in adult prisons and it was also in line with the Patriotic Front government’s policy of upholding children’s rights as well as human rights.

Mr. Mwila expressed confidence that the pardoned convicts have reformed and ready for re-integration in society

He appealed to members of the public not to discriminate against the former inmates but allow them to rebuild their lives again.
