FORMER Lunte constituency MP Felix Mutati is the new MMD president after sailing through unopposed during the party convention held at the Mulungushi Rock of Authority in Kabwe on Saturday. But Dr Nevers Mumba insisted that he was still MMD president alleging that those holding the convention at Kabwe were not representative of the former ruling party and its authority. Dr Mumba accused the organisers of the Kabwe event of being imposters as they were all suspended and expelled from the party on disciplinary grounds. He said none of those present at the Kabwe convention were eligible delegates to participate in the electoral process of the party, and so could not be said to be representative of the former ruling party. The Kabwe convention has since dissolved the National Executive Committee (NEC) and also revoked all suspensions as well as expulsions of MMD party members. Over 1700 delegates from all the ten provinces were gathered at Kabwe’s Mulungushi University where returning officer Edward Mukuka announced Felix Mutati as the new MMD president who was elected unopposed. Former National Secretary Mwansa Mbulakulima expeditiously moved the programme so as to pre-empt any moves from the Mumba faction which might derail the process of putting new office bearers into office. Former Party and Republican President Rupiah Banda graced the occasion which is expected to close on Sunday. And former President Rupiah Banda has urged the MMD to remain peaceful and united. He has also congratulated Mr. Mutati whom he described as a hard working man.
