UPND vice-president for Administration Geoffrey Bwalya Mwamba (GBM) has finally been arrested and detained at Ndola Central Police Station after two days of eluding the police who have been looking for him over the Chisokone market fracas that took place on Thursday. But, UPND leader Hakainde Hichilema consoled UPND supporters at their rally at Freedom in Kitwe and told them not to worry about GBM’s arrest because the party would ensure he was taken out of police custody. Copperbelt Police Commissioner Charity Katanga and Mr Hichilema confirmed the arrest and detention of Mr Mwamba in separate incidences. Ms Katanga said in an interview in Ndola yesterday that Mr Mwamba was arrested at Simon Mwansa Kapwepwe airport in Ndola when he was about to fly out. She said Mr Mwamba had been arrested and detained for malicious damage, assault occasioning bodily harm and conduct likely to cause breach of peace during a fracas at Chisokone market in Kitwe. “Yes, I can confirm that Mr Mwamba or GBM has been arrested and detained at Ndola Central Police Station. He was arrested at Simon Mwansa Kapwepwe Airport when he was about to fly out. “He has been arrested for malicious damage, assault occasioning bodily harm and conduct likely to cause breach of peace during a fracas at Chisokone market in Kitwe,” Ms Katanga said. But, Mr Hichilema consoled UPND supporters at the rally at Freedom park in Kitwe and told them that they should not worry about GBM’s arrest because the party would ensure his release. Mr Hichilema said the PF government had arrested GBM for a crime he did not commit. “As I am speaking now, the PF government has arrested GBM and he is detained in Ndola for a crime he did not commit, but don’t worry, we shall get him out of police detention,” Mr Hichilema said. On thursday last week GBM is alleged to have beaten two marketeers when the traders protested an attempt by the UPND to hold a rally in Chisokone market. The two traders were slapped and and property was distroyed in the fracas that ensured.
