THOSE calling for the postponement of the elections should be ashamed of themselves because they are a stumbling block to peace, the Zambia Republican Party (ZRP) has charged.
ZRP has urged the Electoral Commission of Zambia (ECZ) to remain steadfast in the midst of machinations by what he termed ‘‘bogus politicians’’ to force the Commission to bow to their demands.
ZRP leader Wright Musoma was commenting on Thursday’s assertions by stakeholders at a meeting organised by ECZ who objected to the printing of ballot papers in Dubai and called for the postponement of the August election until all outstanding matters were resolved.
Mr. Musoma said it was sad that the people who aspired to lead the country did not understand ‘‘simple legal implications of the law’’ on the election date, adding that the same people who wanted the Constitution enacted had exposed themselves that they did not understand what they were pushing.
He said the election date was enshrined in the amended Constitution and it was wrong for any individual to think that they could abrogate the Constitution to suit their own selfish motives by calling for the postponement of the polls.
He said it was wrong for a ‘‘handful’’ of political parties that met in Chongwe to object to the printing of ballot papers in Dubai.
“Hakainde Hichilema, Edith Nawakwi or Wynter Kabimba cannot dictate to us how the 2016 elections should be held. They don’t speak for all of us in the opposition or the Zambian people and so their resolve to push the ECZ to postpone the election simply shows that they do not understand the contents of the Constitution which they were pushing for because no individual can change the election dates, not even the President,’’ he said.
