OPPOSITION political parties should emulate President Edgar Lungu who does not issue disparaging remarks or respond to those who attack him, says Zambia National Students Union (ZANASU) secretary general Tebulu Mumba.
In an interview yesterday Mr Mumba said that President Lungu had exhibited politics of maturity and that he had set a good example worth emulating by the opposition political party leaders as he does not issue disparaging remarks or respond to attacks by his opponents.
He has warned that the student body would decampaign any political party whose preoccupation was character assassination as well as issuing careless statements on the peace of the country, stating that the election period was “politically charged up” and that such sentiments would easily plunge the country into chaos.
“President Edgar Lungu has exhibited a high level of political maturity; if you have observed he does not issue disparaging or respond to statements that do not bear any benefit for the country. That is the kind of political maturity we want to see and the opposition political party leaders should emulate him.
“As ZANASU, we will decampaign any political party whose preoccupation is character assassination and threatening national peace which is a symbol of our national heritage. The election period is politically charged up and any threats on peace may easily plunge our country into chaos and once peace is lost, it is hard to get it back,” he said.
Mr Mumba has called on political party leaders not to incite their cadres to be involved in acts of violence through their actions or speech as any statement they issued was taken as an order and as gospel truth.
One senior opposition political leader has consistently urged his cadres to hit back at their opponents whenever they clashed or were provoked.
