ACTION Governance Forum (AGF) has appealed to registered voters to take the verification of provisional voter registers seriously and has appealed to Civil Society Organisations (CSOs) and political parties to take a leading role in sensitising the people on the importance of the exercise.
And the Voter Education Zambia Campaign (VEZC) has advised political parties to conduct their campaigns in a peaceful manner and avoid the use of violence when they felt provoked.
AGF has praised the Electoral Commission of Zambia (ECZ) for coming up with an initiative to allow potential voters verify their details to avoid turning them back on polling day due to inconsistencies in the register.
AGF executive director Justin Mushoke noted that there was a tendancy among Zambians to wait until the last minute but said it was important for voters to verify their details in good time since ECZ had made it clear that it would not extend the verification period.
Mr. Mushoke said the tendency of waiting until the last minute was counter-productive because the ECZ was working within a given time frame to ensure that all was in place before this year’s general elections.
“We would like to thank ECZ for giving Zambians an opportunity to verify their details. This exercise should be taken seriously by all registered voters for them to ensure that their details are correct.
‘‘The verification of the details will help voters to ensure that their details are correct for them not to have problems during voting. Therefore, there is need for the civil society and political parties to encourage the voters to go and verify their details.
