THE UPND has predicted mass defections from the Patriotic Front (PF) after the dissolution of Parliament today but Chishimba Kambwili says those planning to leave the ruling party should not wait until after the expiry of the life of the current National Assembly.
UPND spokesperson Charles Kakoma claimed that the PF would remain a shell of its former self after the dissolution of Parliament because, according to him, most of the ruling party MPs would be defecting to the opposition political party.
Mr Kakoma said in an interview that the PF had already told its serving MPs that 70 percent of them would not be re-adopted to recontest their parliamentary seats and those were the people who would be defecting.
He said many of the MPs were scared of losing their gratuity and now that Parliament was getting dissolved, there would be mass exodus of the parliamentarians and other members from the PF to the UPND.
He said President Edgar Lungu should be ready to be deserted by some of the MPs and ministers he had trusted because they supported him only to secure their positions in Government and in the National Assembly.
“As soon as Parliament dissolves tomorrow (today), we are going to see mass exodus of the PF MPs to the UPND who remained in Parliament for their gratuity. Most of them could not abandon the boat earlier because they were scared of losing their gratuity and President Lungu will remain alone. The PF will remain a shell of its former self. This will be a very interesting episode,” Mr Kakoma said.
But Mr Kambwili said the PF was aware that there were some MPs who would be defecting to the UPND but that the ruling party was not moved because Zambians had already decided to maintain the PF in Government.
“Those who want to resign from the PF please do so now. Why are they hiding? They should not wait for Parliament to dissolve. For me and other faithful PF members who have the heart for the party, we shall remain in the ruling party until the end of time. So for those who want to leave, go, the door is open,” Mr Kambwili said.
Mr Kambwili, however, declared that the PF was destined to win the August general elections and that by the time the results would be announced, the UPND would be in shock and gnashing their teeth.
He said the PF was sure that it was winning the general elections because of its success in delivering its promises to the people and that the ruling party knows how the results of the elections would be.
“We have Government machinery and we know that UPND is planning to make the country ungovernable after losing the elections by causing chaos. The UPND has planned a lot of violent activities and the violence that occurred in Matero is but a precursor of what would happen after elections. They intend to reject the results but we are prepared,” Mr Kambwili said.
