UPND youth sues Chama over Youth Day stampede

By Nation Reporter

UPND youth league wing member Priscilla Mwiinga has sued Patriotic Front secretary general Davies Chama for the conduct and actions of PF cadres led by Lusaka youth provincial chairman Kennedy Kamba during the Youth Day celebrations during which she allegedly lost K4,390.

According to a statement of claim filed in the Lusaka High Court, Ms Mwiinga submitted that on March 12 around 10 hours about 200 UPND youths who were in party regalia joined a procession for the Youth Day celebrations along Independence Avenue at the Freedom Statue.

While waiting with other political parties and organizations, PF youths allegedly abandoned their order of the line-up and began to chant slogans demanding that all the youth groups should go behind them because they were from the ruling party.

Ms Mwiinga said when the UPND youths refused to comply with the PF youths’ demands or directives, Mr Kamba allegedly instructed PF youths to get weapons from his vehicle.

She added that the PF cadres who were dressed in their party regalia began to brandish pangas and other offensive weapons, including firearms, with a menacing attitude aimed at intimidating and threatening all participants who refused to yield to their unreasonable demands.

The hostile actions by the PF cadres caused the participants to scamper in all directions for fear of being injured and that police officers started tear-gasing UPND youths.

Ms Mwiinga claimed that in the confusion that followed she lost various property including K4,390 in cash.

She is claiming for damages and assault as well as exemplary and aggravated damages suffered owing to the negligence and aggressive manner of the PF youths.

Ms Mwiinga also claims for costs and any other reliefs which the court may deem fit.
