ONE police officer was badly injured and is currently nursing wounds at home following the violence that erupted in Lusaka’s Matero township on Sunday in which UPND cadres damaged PF constituency offices, says Lusaka Police Commissioner Nelson Phiri.
“Our officers were stoned, property damaged and innocent people were beaten,” Mr Phiri said.
The cadres also allegedly assaulted some police officers who had gone to provide security at the rally held at the Matero community hall.
Police have instituted investigations against the cadres who broke window panes, damaged walls and burnt documents in the PF Matero constituency office on Sunday afternoon.
Mr Phiri said the behaviour exhibited by the cadres was unacceptable would not be condoned in future.
He said the police allowed the UPND to hold their rally in Matero after notification and police officers were provided for them for security purposes.
“We have instituted investigations into the matter and we shall ensure that the perpetrators are brought to book,” he said.
Mr Phiri said the police command would ensure that the cadres who damaged and assaulted police officers were brought to book.
And an eye-witness Joseph Phiri told the Daily Nation that the UPND cadres overpowered PF youths who challenged them and beat them up.
“The UPND cadres had a rally which started as early as 09 hours but when their leaders delayed to address them they turned violent and beat up any person that crossed their path and came to the PF office which was nearby and threw stones, damaging the office and grabbing empty crates and documents,” he said.
