Former Justice permanent secretary Joseph Akafumba has come out favourite to be adopted as UPND parliamentary aspirant for Livingstone Constituency.
And former district commissioner for Kazungula and Sinazongwe districts during the MMD’s government Fred Siasuntwe has come out favourite for the position of executive mayor.
“Yes, I can confirm that we have completed the process in Livingstone and the only thing remaining now is for the provincial and national executive committees to make their decisions,” an anonymous UPND official said.
The official said despite the process being marred by cash
handouts and bribery from some of the aspiring candidates, the
party managed to conclude the task at ward, district and constituency levels.
“The process has been difficult, emotional and in some cases it involved cash handouts and bribery. It was disappointing to learn that some candidates were giving party officials money in exchange for support. But thank God we are done and it is now up to the senior party leadership to give the people of Livingstone candidates who can win us seats,” said the official.
He said it was clear that people wanted Joseph Akafumba and Fred Siasuntwe to represent them as Livingstone parliamentary candidate and executive mayor respectively.
“I cannot confirm candidates but so far Mr Akafumba and Mr Siasuntwe have performed very well. My appeal to those who did not do well is that they should not despair but remain focused because the decision comes from PEC and NEC,” the official reiterated.
