Police are studying documents obtained from UPND’s Lawyer Martha Mushipe’s firm after the search, Zambia Police acting spokesperson Rae Hamoonga has said.
“We are still going through the documents and once we are ready with a report, we will issue a formal statement,” Mr Hamoonga has said.
The search at Ms Mushipe’s law firm is in connection with the activities of the so-called UPND vigilante group formed to allegedly destabilise the country.
A three-hour search was conducted at the firm by Officers from the Zambia Police and Office of the President after the High Court dismissed an application for leave to apply for judicial review because civil proceedings could not be used to stop criminal matters.
But Ms Mushipe’s lawyer Jack Mwiimbu told journalists after the search that there were no seditious materials found during the search.
Mr Mwiimbu said the only document found was entitled; ‘’Strategy of Domination of Patriotic Front (PF) against opposition UPND 2015-2026 and beyond’’.
He alleged that the document was a strategic paper on violence which PF allegedly planned to use against the UPND.
Mr Mwiimbu said it was unfortunate that PF had decided to abuse the rights of his client, Ms Mushipe, by searching her client’s files thereby compromising lawyer-client confidentiality.
He said he was expecting the Law Association of Zambia (LAZ) to issue a statement and to also take up an appropriate action against the state as a complaint was already lodged.
Mr Mwiimbu said he would seek instructions from Ms Mushipe on the way forward.
He said the state’s action was allegedly aimed at damaging Ms Mushipe’s reputation and professional standing as a lawyer.
