THE defection of some MMD members of Parliament who have endorsed UPND president Hakainde Hichilema has been long overdue because they have always been courting him but it will not change anything, says MMD Chipata Central Member of Parliament Reuben Mutolo Phiri.
On 14th March 12 MMD members of Parliament (MPs) who endorsed and campaigned for Mr Hichilema in the 2015 presidential election resigned from the MMD to officially join the United Party for National Development (UPND).
But Mr Phiri said everybody knew that those who resigned to join UPND and endorsed Mr Hichilema had always supported the UPND leader but their endorsement will not change anything.
Mr Phiri, who is MMD whip in Parliament, said he had always known that the 12 MMD MPs had always courted Mr Hichilema from the time the Patriotic Front assumed office.
“What we have seen is not new because they have always endorsed Mr Hichilema even in 2015; they did the same so it is not new and it will not change anything,” he said.
Mr Phiri said he would continue doing his work as MMD whip in Parliament despite having a divided membership.
“It could have been a surprise to people who didn’t know that those who endorsed HH were not courting him but we all know. It will change nothing,” Mr Phiri said.
He however said it was their constitutional right to endorse Mr Hichilema and there was nothing that MMD could do apart from waiting until Parliament was dissolved by President Edgar Lungu.
Mr Phiri said he could not stop anyone of them from endorsing nor resigning from the former ruling party.
