FOUR criminals, who have been on the police wanted list for a long time, were yesterday gunned down as police intensified the war on rising crime in the capital city.
The men, described as dangerous criminals, were shot dead in a fire fight with officers from the Criminal Investigation Department.
Police spokesperson Munganga Chanda said the command had received information that the criminals, who had been terrorizing residents of Roma township in Lusaka, had regrouped in Chibolya compound. Ms Chanda said the suspects had been on the wanted list for a long time.
“So we made a follow-up and upon realizing that they (criminals) were being pursued they started firing at the officers.”
“We fired back and gunned down four of them,” she said.
Ms Chanda said the police also recovered a Toyota Runx which they were using, one pistol with eight rounds of ammunition, one AK 47 with three rounds of ammunition, an axe, a machete and a craw bar.
Ms Chanda said the bodies were currently in the UTH mortuary.
“The incident happened today around 13 hours,” he said.
