THE North Western development council of elders has praised President Edgar Lungu for calling for a meeting with opposition political parties to bring to and end political violence in the country.
Council chairperson Lucas Chikoti told the Daily Nation that violence had the potential to tear the country apart if left unchecked.
He condemned violent activities that had been perpetrated by political parties across the country in the recent past.
Mr Chikoti said all parties should tame their cadres and advised to avoid apportioning blame for the violence but to commit themselves to end political violence.
He said the organisation is in support of the head of state’s initiative of engaging opposition political party leaders in finding a lasting solution to the violence the country has witnessed in the recent past.
“We are very much in support of the President’s initiative of bringing together leaders of all political parties in the country, because this initiative will not only bring violence to an end but also unite the country, Mr Chikoti said.
He said his organisation hoped that political parties in Zambia will co-exist and uphold the One Zambia One nation spirit after the meeting.
“It is our prayer that after this meeting members of the political parties will have to consider each other as brothers and sisters, because belonging to a political party is just one thing but at the end of the day we are all Zambians,”he said.
He also appealed to youths to avoid being used as tools of violence during and after election by selfish politicians.
“In most cases it is our youths who are ever in forefront being used, by selfish politicians, so it is our humble appeal to all our youths not to fall prey to that, he said.
